Hailing from Slovenia, MAGO makes music that feels like stepping into a neon-lit dream where past and future blur. He calls his style âRetro Electro,â and itâs the perfect way to capture the mix of nostalgia and forward momentum in his sound. His tracks shimmer with familiarity while opening doors to new landscapes. Every song is a journey, unfolding like a story told in basslines and melodies.
What I love about his music is the way it balances playfulness with depth. Youâll hear it in my favourite tracks from him: Electric Dreamscapes, where textures glow like flickering lights on a rainy night, or in MagnĂ©tique, where the synths pull you in with irresistible force, or in RĂȘverie, which drifts like a memory you canât quite let go of. His work is alive with curiosity, and it shows in the way he builds worlds that feel limitless yet deeply personal.
I first connected with MAGO through our collaboration on Avec Moi, a project that opened the door to his musical universe for me. What struck me immediately was not just his sound, but the way he channels pure passion into it. That experience showed me how music ignores distance and how creativity thrives when shared. His openness and ear-driven process show that creativity doesnât always need theory to thrive, it only needs courage to try.

To better understand the world behind his sound, I asked MAGO to share more about his process, his influences, and the experiences that defined his path.
How would you describe your music to someone whoâs never heard it before?
I like to call it âRetro Electro.â Itâs tough to sum up in a simple way because every track feels like a journey waiting to unfold, but that term comes closest to what I do. đ
What track or project are you most proud of and why?
Honestly, Iâm proud of all of them! But if I had to highlight one, it would definitely be The Game. It was created by three people, spread across the globe, coming together purely out of passion. To me, that project proves how music truly knows no boundaries.
Which artists or genres have had the biggest influence on your sound?
House, Electro House, Italo Disco, and Synthwave shaped me the most. As for artists: Tom Neville, Rex the Dog, Giorgio Moroder, and New Order have probably left the biggest mark on my sound.
Was there a defining moment that made you say, âI want to make musicâ?
Iâve always been intrigued by music, but for the longest time I lacked the knowledge, courage, and even the time to try. Honestly, I used to be terrified of the keyboard đ. Then one day, I found out that one of my favorite basslines: Blue Monday by New Order, is played with just four keys. That completely changed everything for me. That was the moment I thought, âOkay⊠maybe I can do this!â đđđŻ
If your sound were a place, color, or emotion, what would it be?
Outer space! đ Probably the best description I can give: it feels limitless.
Do you have a ritual or habit that helps you get into a creative zone?
Not really. All I need is some free time, which doesnât happen often. Thatâs why I use every chance I get. Whether it turns into a full-on creative session or just me fooling around, it doesnât matter. For me, itâs a form of relaxation that nothing else can offer.
Whatâs something surprising people donât usually know about you as an artist?
People are always surprised when they learn I make all my music purely by ear. I never studied music theory, I donât know chords, and when I started, I didnât even know the names of the keys I was pressing đ. For me, that just proves creativity doesnât need rules: only curiosity and the courage to follow your own sound.
Do you have any surprising musical tastes outside your main genre?
Gangsta rap! đđ I actually enjoy most genres: good music is good music, period. But electronic music has always been my go-to. âĄïž
How do you handle creative blocks?
Since making music is more like relaxation for me, I try not to stress about blocks. If nothing fruitful comes out, I just switch gears and make music videos instead. That keeps me creative and busy in a different way. đ
Describe your music in three words that arenât music-related.
Spectral. Shiver. Passage. (Yep, those are also song titles of mine đđđ).
MAGOâs music is proof that sound can cross borders, bend genres, and speak directly to the imagination. His âRetro Electroâ world invites you to travel with him through a universe where memory and outer space meet. Close your eyes, let go of rules, and youâll find yourself drifting in that limitless in-between.
Many thanks to MAGO for sharing his journey and for letting us step inside his Retro Electro universe.
I also had the chance to collaborate with MAGO (and Kalamarico) on The Game, a project we later brought to life with visuals you can explore as well.
