Koala JC makes music that walks the line between drama and ease, cinematic, emotional, and unexpectedly playful. His sound blends the energy of dance music with the storytelling of film, where every drop feels earned and every melody feels like part of a scene you can almost see. Itâs electronic music that doesnât just move your body, it teases your imagination.
What draws me to his work is the way he balances emotion and playfulness. Thereâs a natural ease in how he creates and his music feels fun, yet it carries a quiet depth beneath the surface. Every track seems to hold a story, a spark of curiosity, like a soundtrack to moments that live between night and dawn.
I first connected with Koala JC through social media, where his mix of wit and sincerity stood out instantly. He doesnât just share his art, he makes you feel like youâre part of the process. His music radiates that same openness: honest, textured, and just a little dramatic in all the right ways.

I wanted to look past the sound and into the story: the inspirations, the rituals, and the feelings that shape every note he creates. I asked him a few questions about his process, his influences, and the journey that turned his ideas into the music we hear today.
How would you describe your music to someone whoâs never heard it before?
Well, EDM is too broad of an answer, as there are EDM elements. Iâm heavily inspired by film/advert music, ambient music, etc. So I guess if I had to describe it properly, Iâd say Dramatic Dance with a side of Chill! Though I normally say âEDMâ if I have to describe it off the cuff. It leaves an element of surprise for the listener.
What track or project are you most proud of and why?
My Apophis series that Iâm currently releasing, which is basically five tracks released as singles that eventually any future listeners can hear as an EP. Writing these tracks is the most proud Iâve been. If I had to pick one track from my whole catalogue, I would probably say Little Seal from my first album FRAME. It still gets new listeners today without any promotion on my end, which is lovely.
Which artists or genres have had the biggest influence on your sound?
I could write a BIG list here haha! But honestly, electronic music as a whole has been such an inspiration to listen to. I can pick a few, artists like Bicep, Burial, Boards of Canada, and Radioheadâs more experimental stuff, etc.
Was there a defining moment that made you say, âI want to make musicâ?
I started playing keyboard when I was seven, learning covers, you know the drill, but I never really became creative until I picked up a guitar when I was about eleven and started learning, so probably shortly after that. I grew up with all forms of guitar music, and in my teens got heavily into Nirvana and other heavy bands, which led me to start my own band at school and the rest is history. Iâve had some great successes playing guitar and continue to do so, but I wonât get into that now, I never shut up about what Iâve done!
If your sound were a place, color, or emotion, what would it be?
Koala JC really came from emotions and flashbacks I had from travelling around the world, funnily enough playing guitar in bands or for solo artists! Places like Australia, so letâs say for âplace,â Melbourne!
Orange is my favourite colour, so it has to be that, loud and vibrant, then maybe light brown for my soppy tracks!
Anxious would have to be the emotion. I get pretty anxious about things often, so I imagine that comes through in my music.
Do you have a ritual or habit that helps you get into a creative zone?
I wouldnât say I have any particular habit or ritual, but Iâve noticed my best writing comes from being super tired! When I enter a new project with no plan, it normally starts with me not being fully focused on it until something clicks and then creativity blooms.
Whatâs something surprising people donât usually know about you as an artist?
Going back to a previous question, probably the various tours, sessions, and gigs I do. Some with surprisingly big artists, some smaller, some unknown, and the places Iâve got to visit and people Iâve met just by being a guitarist. I wonât get into names haha! But I am extremely proud of my achievements.
Do you have any surprising musical tastes outside your main genre?
I donât want to sound clichĂ©, but I love all genres really! I love metal music, as an example. I got that from being an angsty teenager way back when!
How do you handle creative blocks?
Youâve just got to flow with it. Never be afraid youâll lose creativity if you switch on a Netflix series instead of hammering into a DAW. Itâll come back! Sometimes finding new music that appeals to you opens it all up again. But time away is just as important as time with it. A bit like anything in life, really.
Describe your music in three words that arenât music-related.
Celebratory, Forgiving, Sexy.
Koala JCâs sound feels like it was made by someone who understands both rhythm and emotion: how to craft a song that moves and feels at the same time. His dedication to music flows through every track, giving his work a pulse thatâs both playful and alive with rhythm.
He calls his style Dramatic Dance with a side of Chill, but what heâs really making are stories you can dance to, but also moments of release, reflection, and warmth. Thereâs energy in every track, but also something personal running underneath it, like emotion hidden in motion.
