Ability to Hear: A Gratitude Piece

Ellie Rizoa Published: July 25, 2026 | Updated: July 20, 2026 2 minutes read

It’s human of us to take for unconsciously take granted the things we use, see, and do every day. And when we talk about it, we usually are reminded of the people in our lives or the jobs that we have. And that’s legit, don’t get me wrong. But we never talk about the senses we carry that allow us to have the experience in life that we go through. As a music producer, I figured the best thing is to remind ourselves that hearing is a gift that not everyone in the world carries.

It’s the smallest things too, like the ability to hear the doorbell of your house ring. Or the laugh of a loved one. Those sounds carry frequencies that are felt in the mind, body and heart. They trigger emotions, memory, even realizations and epiphanies that can steer someone’s life in a beautiful direction if they let it.

As a sample-based producer, I take into appreciation the sound I decide to work with, and all its (im)perfections. I let my ears take in whatever resonates the most, and let them sit with me for a while. I take into account the high and low frequencies that travel from my headphones to my ears. I breathe in the rhythmic bass that also vibrates against my skin. Then I begin creating.

And in that while, the appreciation I have for the ability to hear soars. Because in that appreciation, one can see how sound can be absorbed, changed, flipped, and have that energy still resonate. Then, the music that hits my soul is produced, then shared and released for others to resonate with it. Energy spread to the people with the ability to take it in. And maybe with that, the journey continues with them.

Next time you come across a song you enjoy, say “I’m thankful for the ability to hear”. Because without it, you wouldn’t have been able to feel the way you do at that moment.

Take care of your ears!
